This Grade II listed building was designed by acclaimed architect Vincent E Harris and opened in 1932. Since then, the venue has a developed an extensive legacy where entertainment, and in particular music is concerned. The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix are a couple of examples of the legends which have graced the stage.
The City Hall was originally built as a platform for public speaking before developing into an entertainment venue. It promoted peace concerts during World War Two and just survived the Luftwaffe attacks in December 1940, the frontage and pillars still bear the shrapnel scars. Nowadays the venue hosts over 750 events each year, incorporating a varied and diverse programme of entertainment, arts, business and community events.
Home to the Sheffield International Concert Season, classical music has been a regular since opening. The Sheffield International Concert Season attracts some of the finest orchestras and classical performers from across the world including Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus and The Hallé who are currently the orchestra in residence and season programmers.
